What is Adobe Flash Player, do I need one and is it safe to download.?

Some web sites say my version of flash player is the old version, I did not know I even had one. What is Adobe Flash Player, do I need one and is it safe to download.?
Use this tool to uninstall the previous version:

Now use this to reinstall:

Both of these are from the Adobe site, so they are safe.

EDIT: Thanks Chrisallis, I agree. This method just seems to work for the common ';update your flash player'; problem. What is Adobe Flash Player, do I need one and is it safe to download.?
I agree with Frank N Stein but I would have to say that each time there is an update available go through the remove %26amp; reinstall process as Adobe is well known for leaving your system with vulnerabilites as it doesn't ever remove previous versions or insecure patches.

A list of these are on the link below:

The Adobe Flash player is a browser plug-in which allows you to view Flash content in a web page (such as animations, sound, and video.)

It is not necessary to have the Flash player installed but you will miss out on Flash content without one. It's completely safe to download - make sure you download the installer from the official Adobe website.
