How to trigger the flash on multiple strobes?

Will a pocket wizard work alone or will you need more equipment? How to trigger the flash on multiple strobes?
If you are indoor, you can usually get by with one trigger and one receiver if the rest of your strobes have an optical slave (most monolights have that built in - if you are using speedlights for stobes, most require you to get an external optical slave (I think some of the Nikons may have them built in). An optical slave senses another flash going off, and triggers the flash it is connected to.

If the strobe doesn't have an optical slave, you need a receiver for each light.

When shooting outdoors, optical slaves are of limited effectiveness, and you usually need a receiver per light. How to trigger the flash on multiple strobes?
If you are using a high end Nikon speedlight ( or the built in speedlight on the mid to high end cameras) there is the creative lighting system built in, the CLS lets you control unlimited number of speedlights in 3 different groups. If not you can use pocket wizards or other radio devices, you can use optical slaves or you can go the cheapest route and use PC cords. If you are using optical slaves with speedlights make sure they can be set to ignore the preflashes that modern iTTL speedlights use to send and gather data. You want them set to fire with the exposing flash not the pre-flashes, If you are getting into this I really suggest you go to www.stobist.com and take a few moments to go thought the lighting 101 section. Its really good information that explains all of these options and a good bit more
a wizzard or a IR slave will do it for you
